Were Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson the O.G. Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle?

The Duchess of York issued a call to action against bullying and fake rivalries.

The relationship between new royal Meghan Markle and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, has been portrayed as an adversarial one in the UK press, particularly in the last few months. Their every move in relation to each other has been scrutinized and negatively read into, even when there's a positive, logical explanation that might suggest otherwise. And if you ask Sarah Ferguson, aka Fergie, aka Duchess of York, that's just something the press has done for years and years.

“Women, in particular, are constantly pitted against and compared with each other in a way that reminds me of how people tried to portray [Princess] Diana and me all the time as rivals, which is something neither of us ever really felt,” Fergie wrote in an essay in support of the #HelloToKindness campaign by UK celeb magazine Hello!

Fergie sees what happened to her and Princess Diana, and what's happening to Meghan and Kate, to be a form of bullying, one that's only magnified in the social media era. She draws strong parallels in her essay, which calls for action.

“I believe that it’s time to take a stand,” she wrote. “This isn’t about freedom of speech. The truth is, it’s not acceptable to post abuse or threats on social media or news sites, and it’s not acceptable to harangue other users simply because they disagree with you. It’s not acceptable to pit women against one another all the time. It’s not acceptable to troll other people viciously online.”
